Critical Incident Peer Support for Law Enforcement & Public Safety

This is a 2-day course with 4 modules, role-playing activities and scenario discussions. The objective of the Critical Incident Peer Support for Law Enforcement & Public Safety course is to train the officer to be able to offer support, or psychological first aid, to their fellow officers.

This course is designed to train law enforcement & public safety officers to be effective peer supporters.  As an approved International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) course, 16 ILETB hours are awarded as continuing education hours. Completion of this course satisfies the training requirements for IC 36-8-2.5-2 (Confidentiality of Communications) for Critical Incident Stress Management Services.

Objectives:  At the completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Distinguish between stress and critical incident stress.
  • Identify the main principles of critical incident peer support.
  • Explain the responsibilities of a critical incident peer supporter.
  • Employ one-on-one intervention techniques following a critical incident.

  • Critical Incident Stress and Stress Management
  • Mental Health Issues and Treatments for public safety
  • Critical Incident Disorders/Diseases, PTSD
  • Critical Incident Peer Support (definition, goal, history, skills, and responsibilities)
  • Intervention Strategies
  • Coping Strategies
  • LEO / Public Safety Suicide intervention, prevention and postvention (QPR model training)
  • Line of Duty Deaths & Injury
  • Peer Support Program Issues – peer support team / family support team
  • Communication Skills
  • Peer Support Intervention Models (ABC and SAFE-R)
  • Peer Support Resources

DATES & LOCATION:  Held on May 8th & 9th from 8 am to 4pm CST at the Porter Co. Sheriff’s Office Training Room – 2755 St. Rd. 49, Valparaiso, IN 46383

COST:  $225.00 per student - this includes course registration with ICISF, course materials and training certificates.
