    Updated On: Mar 19, 2020

    To our Indiana FOP family,

I pray that this letter finds you and your family healthy and happy. These are unprecedented times to be sure. I'm thankful that Hoosiers have responded (for the most part) responsibly to this crisis. From listening to the experts, we are not in the thick of things yet, so we have to stay the course!  I'm most thankful to be a part of the greatest profession! While I've been "off the street" for a few years, I'm still honored and proud when I hear of the fine professionalism and responsiveness of the men and women of Indiana law enforcement. Even after all these years, I still get emotional when I watch you in action.

As you may know by now, the Indiana FOP office is closed to walk-in traffic. Delaina and Rebecca are continuing to work from the office for now but there are contingency plans should they need to work from home. As always, they are a phone call away. I have been in contact with your Executive Board as well as members throughout the state. I have been in contact with President Deegan from Muncie and as of now, there are no plans to postpone the June conference but as you can imagine that is very fluid and could change even tomorrow. I would anticipate a decision within the next two weeks regarding postponement.

Also, I have been in contact with several lodge presidents who have inquired about staying open.  As of now I would suggest anything in the next two weeks be postponed but I will leave it up to the local lodges and their boards to decide future postponements.

The National Spring Board meeting to be held in Kansas City was cancelled and will be conducted via conference call this weekend.

The National FOP in conjunction with COPS has decided to cancel the National Memorial Week for the first time in its history.

Indiana Schools have been cancelled until at least May 1.

As you can see, everything about this pandemic requires decisions to be made that have not needed to be made in our history.

I would encourage you to get back to basics, enjoy your family and the family time this event has created. Read some of that stack of books that have been gathering dust that you've sworn you were going to get to.  Break out your old CD's (music, not financial) and take a walk down memory lane. (Notice I didn't say 8-tracks). Enjoy quiet...I'll bet you'll find that it's nice to be still and daydream once again.

I'm confident we will get through this and return to hopefully a different normal where we slow down just a little and enjoy life just a little more.

    Fraternally,

    Bill Owensby
