Robert “Eye” Imborek
As Hammond FOP 51 and the Indiana FOP State Lodge mourn the passing of our Brother Bob Imborek, we also remember him as a friend, brother, mentor, advocate and a man who walked the talk of his FOP Oath to aid a worthy brother or Sister whenever in his power to do so.
Robert Eye began his career with the Hammond Indiana Police Department and served
from 1972 through 1995. He served as a Patrol Officer, Traffic Investigator, Corporal,
Motorcycle Officer, Sergeant in Personnel and Training (where he implemented the
first Field Training Program) Patrol Captain, and Chief of Police. He also served on the
Pension Board as both a Trustee and Secretary.
He began his lifelong involvement in the FOP in Hammond Lodge 51, where he served
as Treasurer, State and National Delegate and President. During this time he was
awarded FOP 51’s highest award, The Delbert Purkey Award “for promoting the true
meaning of fraternalism and brotherhood”.
Bob was called to serve as an Indiana State FOP officer and was the longest serving
National Trustee for the State of Indiana. During his time of service to the State and
National Lodges, he was instrumental in creating the concept of labor activism in
Indiana, and helped create the Indiana Labor Council, the Indiana Legal Defense
Program, and was active in the National Legal Defense Program. The Indiana FOP
awarded him the R. Pat Stark Award (Indiana FOP’s highest award) and the Addie
Maddox Award. The Indiana FOP also created the Robert “Eye” Imborek Award for
outstanding achievements in the cause of labor, and Bob was the initial recipient of the
award named in his honor.
Bob also helped create and found the Hammond Police Credit Union.
Robert Eye loved the Hammond Police Department, Hammond FOP lodge 51, the
Indiana and National FOP, and his brothers and sisters across Indiana and the United
States. If you are an FOP member anywhere in our great country, the work of Robert
“Eye” Imborek has impacted your life in some way.
Most importantly Bob was a dedicated and loving husband to Robie, father to Josh and
Katie, a devoted grandfather, and a loyal friend.
We thank our brother for a life well lived, and we will see you again one day.
Godspeed Robert Eye
